Using Real-Life Stories to Highlight Road Safety Through Just 1 Life

Just 1 Life is a road safety education programme run by the Rotary Club Wexford in partnership with Wexford County Council, aimed at reducing road deaths and serious injuries among young people.

The initiative, led by members of the Rotary Club, mainly targets secondary school and Transition Year students and focuses on showing the real-life impact of dangerous behaviour on the roads.

Speaking about the programme, project lead Michael Tierney said Just 1 Life takes a different approach to traditional road safety education by using emotional, real-world experiences rather than classroom-based learning alone.

Students hear directly from emergency services including Gardaí, paramedics and the fire service, along with medical professionals and mental health experts. The programme also includes first-hand accounts from people whose lives have been affected by road traffic collisions.

Large-scale events are regularly held in venues including the National Opera House, creating an immersive experience aimed at encouraging safer decisions before young people begin driving or travelling independently.

Thousands of students take part in the programme each year, with the initiative continuing to gain national recognition and interest from other counties looking to develop similar road safety programmes.
