People across County Wexford are being encouraged to show their support for family carers as Family Carers Ireland launches its Heart of Gold campaign as part of National Carers Week 2026.
National Carers Week runs from Monday, June 8th to Sunday, June 14th, with Heart of Gold Day taking place on Thursday, June 11th. The campaign aims to raise both awareness and vital funds for the thousands of people who provide unpaid care to loved ones every day.
According to Family Carers Ireland, there are an estimated 19,810 family carers in Wexford supporting relatives and friends living with illness, disability, additional needs, mental health challenges or addiction.
For many carers, the role involves significant personal sacrifices, including disrupted sleep, reduced income, missed career opportunities and social isolation. Despite these challenges, family carers play a crucial role in helping loved ones remain at home, surrounded by familiar faces and in comfortable surroundings.
Funds raised through the Heart of Gold campaign will help Family Carers Ireland continue providing a range of essential supports, including its National Freephone Careline, counselling services, emergency respite, training programmes, support groups, advocacy services and assistance through local Carer Support Centres.
The campaign is being supported by Lidl Ireland. Throughout June, customers can contribute by purchasing a €2 Heart of Gold pin or a specially selected flower bouquet in any of Lidl's 191 stores nationwide, with proceeds going directly to Family Carers Ireland.
Lidl staff will also participate in a charity spinathon, while customers can support the charity year-round by donating their Deposit Return Scheme refunds in-store.
In Wexford, supporters can get involved at Lidl stores in Enniscorthy, Wexford Town, Rosslare Road, Gorey and New Ross.
Jason Carroll, Community Support Manager with Family Carers Ireland, says family carers are looking for more than recognition.
"When we talk to family carers, what we hear again and again is that they are not looking for praise. They want practical support, a break when they are exhausted, someone to listen when things become too much, and recognition of the reality of what they are carrying every day."
He says the Heart of Gold campaign gives people an opportunity to make a real difference.
"Every pin bought, every bouquet purchased and every donation made helps provide support to family carers who may be isolated, under pressure or in need of urgent help."
Family Carers Ireland is encouraging people across Wexford to get behind the campaign during National Carers Week and help ensure that those caring for loved ones know they are not alone.
