Wexford Carers Urged to Check Eligibility for €2,000 Support Grant

Family carers in Wexford are being encouraged to check their eligibility for the annual Carer’s Support Grant, with payments of €2,000 being issued this week.

The grant is automatically paid to those receiving Carer’s Allowance or Carer’s Benefit, but carers who do not qualify for those schemes may still be eligible and can apply through the Department of Social Protection.

Wexford carer and advocate Jane Johnson welcomed the payment, describing it as an important support for families providing care to loved ones at home.

However, she said the grant represents only a fraction of the support needed by carers, many of whom provide care around the clock while facing rising household and healthcare costs.

Johnson also highlighted the need for better long-term planning and services for people with disabilities, including access to therapies, day services and future residential supports.

She is supporting the ‘Before We Die’ campaign, which is seeking greater certainty for families concerned about what will happen to vulnerable loved ones when parents or carers are no longer able to provide care.
