Wexford CouncillorS Criticise Planned 15% Public Transport Fare Increases

A Wexford councillor says planned increases in public transport fares could discourage people from leaving their cars at home.

The National Transport Authority has announced its first broad fare increase since 2018, with many adult bus and rail fares set to rise by an average of around 15 percent from January 2027.

TFI Local Link single fares will also increase by an average of 15 percent, while the 50 percent discount for Young Adults and Students will remain.

Councillor Pat Barden says public transport must remain affordable if the Government wants more people to use it.

He also raised concerns about rural communities where public transport options remain limited, pointing to demand for additional Local Link services in areas including Adamstown.

The NTA says passenger numbers are at record levels and additional revenue is needed to support increased capacity and improved services.

It says fares will remain around eight percent below their 2018 level despite the increases.
