Wexford Gun Owners Could Be Impacted by Proposed EU Restrictions on Lead Ammunition, NARGC Warns

Thousands of licensed shotgun owners in Wexford could be affected by proposed European Union restrictions on lead ammunition, according to the National Association of Regional Game Councils (NARGC).

The organisation says changes under proposed EU chemical regulations could eventually lead to restrictions on the importation of lead ammunition into Ireland, creating concerns for firearm users across rural communities.

Speaking on South East Radio’s Morning Mix, NARGC Chairman Dan Curley said the issue has the potential to affect up to 150,000 licensed shotgun owners nationally, including an estimated 1,600 to 1,700 people in County Wexford. He said many are farmers and occasional users who rely on firearms for activities such as crop and livestock protection.

According to the NARGC, the proposals are being considered at European level under chemical restriction regulations, with a vote expected later this month. Mr Curley claimed there has been insufficient engagement between representative groups and Irish authorities ahead of the process.

Among the concerns raised by the organisation is the compatibility of older firearms with alternative ammunition types, particularly steel shot. Mr Curley said many shotguns currently in use were originally designed for lead ammunition and argued that switching to alternatives without sufficient information and preparation could create practical and safety concerns for users.

The NARGC is calling for greater consultation with stakeholders and says a full risk assessment should be carried out and published before any future restrictions are introduced.

Mr Curley also called on Government departments and agencies involved in wildlife, environmental and regulatory matters to provide clearer communication on Ireland’s position ahead of any decision-making process.

The organisation says it remains open to engagement and plans to continue raising awareness of the issue among members and rural communities across Wexford and beyond.
