Minister for Housing, Heritage and Local Government James Browne officially opened a new social housing development in Gorey today, marking another milestone in housing delivery across County Wexford.
Cúirt Dhiarmaid Uí Shúilleabháin, located in Creagh, consists of 22 high-quality, energy-efficient homes including a mix of houses and apartments close to local services and amenities.
The development was delivered by Wexford County Council through funding of more than €8.8 million from the Department of Housing’s Social Housing Investment Programme.
The estate has been named in honour of Diarmaid Ó Súilleabháin, a respected teacher at St Joseph’s CBS Primary School in Gorey and an acclaimed Irish language writer whose legacy in education and literature continues to be recognised in North Wexford.
Speaking at the official opening, Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council Cllr Joe Sullivan said the naming of the development ensures Diarmaid Ó Súilleabháin’s contribution to Gorey will continue to be remembered.
Minister Browne said housing delivery is about more than numbers and described the development as providing homes, opportunities and a community for local families.
Wexford County Council Chief Executive Eddie Taaffe said the project forms part of a wider programme of social and affordable housing delivery across the county and expressed hope that many more housing developments will follow in the years ahead.
The homes are now occupied, with well wishes extended to the new residents as they begin life in their new community.
