Wexford Schools Encouraged to Join Blue Star Programme Ahead of Ireland's EU Presidency

Primary school teachers across Wexford are being encouraged to register for the 2026/27 Blue Star Programme, which helps pupils learn about the European Union through fun, creative and interactive projects.

The call has come from Minister for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne, as registrations open for the award-winning programme ahead of Ireland assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union next month.

The Blue Star Programme introduces pupils to European history, geography, culture and creativity while helping them gain a better understanding of how EU institutions work and how decisions made at European level affect their daily lives.

Minister Byrne said the programme offers a valuable opportunity for students to strengthen their knowledge of European issues at an important time for Ireland.

The initiative is open to all primary school classes, from junior infants through to sixth class, and can be adapted to suit different age groups and school settings, including DEIS schools, Gaelscoileanna and island schools.

The programme, now entering its 16th year, is delivered by European Movement Ireland and funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs. Organisers say thousands of pupils have taken part since its launch, helping to promote civic participation and awareness of the European Union.

Teachers interested in taking part can find further information and register through the Blue Star Programme website.

Registration for the 2026/27 programme is now open.
