A Wexford Senator has called for tougher penalties for illegal dumping in rural Ireland.
Speaking in the Dáil today, Cathal Byrne argued that fines, which currently range from €150 to €3,000, are not enough to deter offenders.
He emphasized the growing public frustration and urged the government to take stronger action. He proposed increasing both the fines and the category of the offence, with extra penalties for dumping in conservation areas or on beaches.
Byrne also pushed for a “name and shame” policy, suggesting that individuals convicted of illegal dumping should have their names published, just like those convicted of serious crimes.
