Wicklow-Wexford TD Slams Funding Imbalance Between RTÉ 2FM and Independent Radio

Fine Gael TD Brian Brennan has strongly criticised what he describes as the underfunding of independent radio stations, including South East Radio, compared with RTÉ's 2FM.

Speaking at the Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport, the Wicklow-Wexford TD questioned RTÉ executives over the value for money delivered by the national station.

Deputy Brennan pointed to figures showing that 2FM recorded costs of €4.4 million in 2024, while independent radio stations across Ireland received €3.5 million in funding last year.

He highlighted the difference in audience share, claiming independent radio accounts for 71% of listenership nationally, compared with 7% for 2FM.

"Do you feel we are getting value for money from 2FM? Because I certainly don't," he told the committee.

Deputy Brennan specifically referenced South East Radio, East Coast FM, Newstalk and Today FM, questioning why the independent sector receives comparatively limited public support.

However, RTÉ Director General Kevin Bakhurst defended the figures, explaining that the €4.4 million represented operating costs rather than a direct subsidy, and that commercial revenue generated by 2FM was roughly equivalent.

RTÉ's Patricia Monahan also defended the station's public-service role, particularly its responsibility to cater for younger listeners aged 15 to 34.

She said 2FM performs strongly among that demographic, with an audience share of approximately 9%.

Deputy Brennan remained critical, arguing that funding should better reflect listenership and performance.

"I feel that the independent sector are totally underfunded," he said.

"71% of people listen to independent radio and 7% listen to 2FM. And 2FM are getting more funding. To me that is wrong."
