Young people from Wicklow and Wexford have called on the Government to increase investment in youth work services in Budget 2027, warning that rising demand is placing significant pressure on existing supports.

The appeal was made at a National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) event in Buswells Hotel, Dublin, where Murrintown native Gráinne Thompson met local TDs Malcolm Byrne and Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin to highlight the importance of youth services in their communities.

The event brought together young people, youth workers and volunteers from across the country to speak directly with elected representatives about the impact of youth work.

NYCI is calling for an additional €27.3 million in funding to help stabilise services and ensure safe, accessible youth spaces remain available nationwide.

A recent NYCI survey found that 77% of youth workers are concerned about funding levels over the next 12 months, while 85% reported an increase in demand for services in the past six months.

Speaking at the event, Gráinne Thompson said youth work plays a vital role in building stronger, more connected communities.

NYCI Director of Policy and Advocacy Kathryn Walsh said services are under increasing pressure due to rising costs and limited resources, warning that without additional investment, programmes could be significantly impacted.

The organisation’s #YouthWorkersChangeLives campaign aims to highlight the value of youth work and strengthen support ahead of the upcoming Budget.

The initiative is supported by Community Foundation Ireland through its Local Champions programme, which aims to amplify youth voices in policy discussions
