IRELAND’S POST OFFICES NEED TO REMODEL ‘TO FILL SPACE THE BANKS HAVE LEFT’

Post offices around the country need to “diversify and modernise” in order to attract new customers.

A government commissioned report being published this morning examines the mounting pressures being faced by Irish post offices – 24 of which closed between 2011 and 2014.

It found that of the 1,100 post offices in Ireland, the vast majority of transactions are carried out in just 300 of them.

Report author, entrepreneur and broadcaster Bobby Kerr says An Post has the potential to fill the space left by banks in rural Ireland in particular.

“An Post is the most trusted brand in the country, it also has the best distribution bar-none in the country – 93 percent of the population live within 5K of a post office” he said.
