NEW WEXFORD PLANT TO SUPPLY POWER POWER TO HALF A MILLION HOMES

A new power plant is being officially open in Wexford today, which will generate enough energy to power 500,000 Irish homes.

SSE has invested more than 350 million euro in the construction of the new facility at Great Island – making it one of Ireland’s cleanest and most efficient power plants.

The company has also spent 43 million euro on completing a 41 kilometre gas pipeline from Bawnlusk in Co Kilkenny, bringing gas to the South East for the first time.

Manager of the plant Padraig Dunleavy told Southeast Radio that it’s a major development.

“With a new plant we generate more than twice as much electricity as we did in the old plant” he said.

“ION the old plant, we could generate about 220 megawatts of electricity; and in our new plant here in Great Island, we’ll be able to generate 464 megawatts of electricity” he added.
