100-years after they died at sea, fethard lifeboatmen remembered

A weekend of events are taking place around County Wexford to commemorate the lost lifeboatmen of Fethard RNLI who drowned 100 years ago this week. The lifeboatmen died while attempting to rescue survivors of the Norweigan schooner the Mexico in 1914. A wreath laying ceremony took place at 2:30 Saturday in Fethard attended by relatives and Coast Guard and RNLI officials, amongst others. Three RNLI lifeboats and the Waterford based rescue helicopter also paid tribute to the men. Another wreath-laying ceremony will take place on Sunday at the Burrow in Rosslare Strand. Saturday night the Wexford Sinfonia performed the world premiere of Heroes of the Helen Blake at a concert in Wexford County Council's offices. All monies raised raised from the concert will be donated in aid of the RNLI.
