Abp's purchase of slaney meats stake raised with eu competition commissioner
The issue of the ABP group's purchase of a fifty percent state in Slaney Meats and Irish Country Meats in Clohamon and Camolin has been raised with the EU Competition Commissioner. A meeting took place yesterday between the Commissioner and MEP's Mairead McGuinness and Jim Nicholson. It's on foot of concerns that following the purchase the ABP group may reduce competiton for beef and lamb in the market place. Mairead McGuinness says the commissioner is going to liase with the Irish Competition Authority on the matter: "There are no unintended consequences from any business arrangements where we see...more and more control of a particluar sector in the hands of any one company and I think that is the key part of this discussion and the commissioner did say that she will be certainly watching" she said.
