By-elections confirmed for longford-westmeath and dublin-west
The government has named the day for the Longford-Westmeath and Dublin-West by-elections. Voters in the two constituencies will go to the polls on May 23rd - the same day as the local and European elections. The seats are vacant following the death of Nicky McFadden in March. While the seat in Dublin-West is vacant after the resignation of Patrick Nulty. Government Chief Whip, Wexford's Paul Kehoe says it is right to hold these by-elections now. "The government today has decided to move the writs to allow the people of Dublin-West and Longford-Westmeath again to be fully represented in this Dail" he said. With local and European elections planned for the 23rd of May, it would unacceptable to delay these by-elections and deny the people of these constituencies and opportunity to vote and to give them full Dail representation" he added.
