Enniscorthy Councillor Jackser Owens is calling for a pharmacy to open for at least an hour on Sundays in a district where he says there is currently no chemist available on some weekends.
He says the issue arises roughly once every six weeks, leaving people without access to a local pharmacy and forcing some to travel to another town to collect prescriptions.
Cllr Jackser Owens says the district has around 35,000 people and that many residents have contacted him about the difficulties they face, particularly when a child or another family member becomes ill at the weekend.
He has asked for a local pharmacy to open for an hour on Sundays to allow people to collect urgent prescriptions.
He says he has also contacted the council about the issue and is calling for a solution to be found.
He claims the Irish Pharmacy Union has said pharmacies face difficulties covering the cost of Sunday staffing.
