Dog owners are being advised to take extra precautions to protect their pets as Halloween fireworks are expected to cause distress for animals.
Sudden bangs and bright flashes can frighten dogs, with some becoming so startled that they run away and risk getting lost or injured.
Vet Niamh O’Shaughnessy from O’Shea, Bramley and Breen says keeping pets indoors is one of the most important steps owners can take, particularly during the evenings when fireworks are likely to be let off.
She also advises owners to speak to their local vet about suitable calming medication if their animals are particularly anxious or have struggled with fireworks in previous years.
Creating a quiet, comfortable space inside the home can also help pets feel more secure.
Owners are encouraged to plan ahead rather than wait until their pets become frightened, helping ensure Halloween is as safe and comfortable as possible for their four-legged family members.
