Controversial Ferrymountgarret Bridge Closure Nears End as Reopening Date Confirmed

The Ferrymountgarret Bridge is expected to reopen to traffic next Friday, August 28th, bringing to an end more than two months of disruption which sparked considerable concern in New Ross.

Kilkenny County Council says works are progressing well, with the removal of scaffolding above the bridge, waterproofing and the laying of concrete taking place over the past week.

Crews have also been working late into the evenings in an effort to keep the project on schedule, while resurfacing is due to get underway this weekend.

The R700 crossing has been closed since June 24th to facilitate the works.

However, the decision to completely close the bridge for more than two months met with opposition in New Ross, particularly over the impact on businesses, shoppers and people travelling between South Kilkenny and the town.

Local councillors were strongly critical of the level of communication with local residents and warned that closing the bridge could “cripple the town of New Ross”. Concerns were also raised over the lack of pedestrian and cycle access during the closure and the lengthy diversions facing people who regularly use the crossing.

As the works progressed it was reported that footfall in New Ross significantly reduced following the closure.

Kilkenny County Council says it is now confident the bridge will reopen as planned on Friday, August 28th.

The Council has thanked residents, businesses and road users for their patience and cooperation throughout the works.
