Council Warns Of Scam Texts Linked To Fake Traffic Fines

Wexford County Council says a message purporting to be from the council about parking fines is a scam.

The text reads "Please note that you have outstanding traffic fines. Failure to pay them on time may result in additional fines" and contains a link to an unknown website.

Council officials say the text is not genuine and are asking the public not to click on any links, provide personal information, or make any payments in response to suspicious messages.

If you receive the message, you're advised not to engage with the sender, delete the message entirely and contact your mobile service provider or the Gardai if appropriate.

The council also says you should "please remain vigilant and help protect family, friends and neighbours by sharing this warning."

It comes just days after the Advertising Standards Authority launched a new online resource highlighting scam ads and texts that are becoming increasingly sophisticated and more costly.

The ASA's 'Scam Ads Info Hub' is aimed at raising public awareness about the scams, helping people to spot the ads and to know where to report them.

In July 2025, ComReg launched an SMS sender ID registry to help label unidentified senders as "Likely Scams".

That report was funded by the Local Democracy Reporting Scheme.
