Court rules christian-owned bakery discriminated against gay man
A court in Belfast has ruled a Christian-owned bakery discriminated against a gay man, after refusing to make him a cake endorsing same-sex marriage. Gareth Lee asked Ashers Bakery to ice Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie on the cake, as well as the logo of a gay rights campaign group. The company declined, claiming that went against its beliefs. Reporter Michelle Clifford, who was in court, says a judge has now ruled that was illegal. "I wouldn't be surprised though if there is an appeal and it goes to the higher courts" she said. "The maximum fine that can be levied against the bakery is 500 pounds". "Those who brought the action are saying that it wasn't about the money" she added.
