A group of dedicated cyclists are preparing to take on one of Ireland’s toughest endurance challenges this June, cycling from Mizen Head to Malin Head and back again over six demanding days in support of dementia awareness and services.
Cyclist Peter Mitten and Carmel Geoghegan, a passionate advocate for greater public understanding and support for those living with dementia and their families, are involved in the initiative.
Taking place from June 15th to June 20th, 2026, the route will cover more than 1,100 kilometres from Ireland’s southernmost point to its northern tip and back again, a test of endurance, determination, and commitment. But for those taking part, this challenge goes far beyond the physical demands of cycling.
The event is being organised in support of Dementia Ireland, with a focus on the more than 64,000 people in Ireland currently living with dementia. Many of the riders are taking part in memory of loved ones, as well as to stand in solidarity with families navigating the daily realities of the condition.
Each kilometre cycled represents hope for improved services, greater awareness, and continued progress in research and care. The challenge is as much about remembrance and connection as it is about endurance, driven by a shared commitment to a future where dementia is better understood and better supported.
