Wexford Bus Operator Calls For Traffic Controls At Crosstown Graveyard After Major Funeral Disruption

A Wexford bus operator is calling for a one-way traffic system, Garda presence and stricter parking enforcement at Crosstown Graveyard after a large funeral caused major disruption last Friday.

Jimmy, who operates buses across the county, says the road was blocked for up to two hours, leaving his vehicles unable to move and forcing him to miss three scheduled pick-ups.

Speaking on South East Radio’s Morning Mix, he said the disruption affected transport arrangements for jurors at Wexford Courthouse, students at John’s Road Mercy School. and guests travelling to a wedding in Gorey.

Jimmy said his wife contacted Wexford Garda Station during the incident but was told there was only one patrol car available and it was dealing with another incident.

He says the lack of traffic management caused significant difficulties, with vehicles parked on both sides of the road and no cones or other controls in place.

According to Jimmy, Gardaí and traffic controls had been in place at previous large funerals following concerns raised more than a year ago.

He is now calling for a one-way system, with traffic entering via the lower road near Ferrybank Motors and exiting via the upper road near the VTN Centre at Bowdoins.

He also wants Gardaí present during large funerals, cones laid out to ensure parking is restricted to one side of the road, and a tow truck available to remove vehicles parked illegally or dangerously.

Jimmy says the disruption had financial consequences for his business, while alternative arrangements had to be made for those affected.

Students waiting outside the schools had to be collected by private vehicles, wedding guests travelled to Gorey in cars, and food had to be brought in from a hotel for the jury at the courthouse.

He believes advance notice and better coordination around large funerals would help prevent similar incidents.

Jimmy also called on local people to make their concerns known, saying he believes residents are reluctant to speak out about the issue.

South East Radio said it would contact the relevant authorities, including Wexford County Council and An Garda Síochána, for a response to the concerns raised.
