After nearly two decades, Duncannon Beach is set to be awarded its Blue Flag status once again. This prestigious environmental award, which Duncannon first received in 1988 through a collective community effort, was lost in 2006. However, recent improvements, including the installation of a new sewage system by Uisce Éireann and Wexford County Council, have paved the way for the beach to meet the strict environmental standards required to regain the flag.
Significant work has also been carried out at the community level by Duncannon Village Renewal and Duncannon Tidy Towns, with regular beach cleanups contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable environment. Additionally, Wexford County Council, through Eoin Kinsella’s EU-funded scheme, has supported local farmers in preventing land run-off that can negatively impact local waterways.
The beach’s anticipated Blue Flag renewal, which will be announced in May by An Taisce, is a testament to the concerted efforts of the community and local authorities. However, maintaining this recognition will require continued dedication to preserving the beach’s environmental health, with a joint management plan in place between the local community and Wexford County Council.
This momentous achievement not only celebrates Duncannon's natural beauty but also highlights the power of community action and collaboration for environmental sustainability.
