From Mini Marathon to World Champion Stage: Wexford Athlete Bernie Millar Still Racing Strong at 65+

Bernie Millar’s sporting journey has spanned more than four decades and she’s showing no signs of slowing down.

She first laced up her running shoes in 1984, taking part in the Women’s Mini Marathon in aid of children’s cancer research, marking the beginning of a lifelong commitment to endurance sport. A member of Slaney Olympic Running Club, Bernie went on to build an impressive multi-discipline career that has taken her across Ireland and Europe.

By 1998, she had moved into triathlon, completing her first event in Carrick-on-Suir, followed by further races in 1999 and 2000, including international competition such as the Chicago Triathlon, also in support of children’s cancer research. Alongside this, she completed numerous half marathons and marathons at home and abroad with friends.

In more recent years, Bernie discovered HYROX, a hybrid fitness racing format combining running and functional fitness. Encouraged by her daughters and friends already competing, she went along to support… and quickly became hooked.

Now training three times a week with AWOL (A Way Of Life) in Enniscorthy, Bernie has taken her competitive form to a new level. Her dedication paid off when she qualified for the HYROX World Championships in Madrid in November 2025.

She has also enjoyed major success in Tryka competitions, a similar endurance format, taking first place in her age category (65–69) in both January and April 2026.

Reflecting on her journey, Bernie credits the constant support of family and friends, particularly Orla and Greta, as a driving force behind her continued success.

From local roads to international championship arenas, Bernie Millar’s story is one of resilience, community, and a lifelong passion for pushing limits, proving that endurance sport has no expiry date.
