The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant scheme continues to make significant strides in addressing the housing shortage, with Wexford receiving €6.44 million to bring 117 derelict homes back into use. The funding, which is part of a broader national initiative, has seen a growing number of homeowners in Wexford applying for grants since the program’s launch in July 2022. Out of 525 applications from county residents, 385 have been approved, showing the high demand and success of the scheme. Nationally, the scheme has led to the refurbishment of 3,672 homes, with more than €200 million allocated to the initiative as of Q3 2025. This reflects a wider national trend with a 126% increase in grant payments compared to the same period last year. Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage & Wexford TD James Browne has welcomed the figures saying that vacant and derelict properties are “unacceptable” in a housing crisis and vowed to continue tackling this issue through the grant and other measures such as the newly introduced Derelict Property Tax. Wexford’s success is part of a broader national momentum with Donegal, Cork and Dublin seeing the highest number of applications.
