A significant funding boost has been announced for Co. Wexford, with €7.2 million allocated for Active Travel and Greenway projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists, and e-scooter users across the county. The funding will prioritize projects that improve road safety, develop pedestrian pathways and create more accessible cycle lanes in key towns and villages in Co. Wexford. Part of the total €7.2 million will be dedicated to the development of Lot 4 of the Greenway. This section includes the north side of New Ross, as well as the bridge and tunnel in the area. The Greenway is a key project in creating a connected and sustainable transport route that will benefit both locals and tourists. Speaking to South East Radio News, New Ross Councillor Michael Sheehan expressed his delight at the funding announcement, calling it “very positive news for County Wexford” and “brilliant news for New Ross.” He further explained the split of the funding allocation, with part going toward Active Travel initiatives to improve safety on local roads and the other part earmarked for Greenway development. “It’s fantastic news for the county, and I’m delighted to see the funding arrive. It’s been a long road, but after lobbying Minister O’Brien, we’ve received confirmation that the total allocation of €7.2 million will support projects aimed at improving the infrastructure for active travel and the Greenway,” Sheehan said. In addition to the Greenway funding, Sheehan highlighted the need for Active Travel funding specifically for New Ross, where he has been advocating for improvements to the footpaths and lighting along the ring road. He stressed the importance of integrating the ring road with the Greenway to create a secure, safe and accessible route for pedestrians, cyclists and runners. “This funding will enable us to develop a trail that’s not only safe but also accessible at all times of the day or night. It’s crucial for the health and well-being of the community and I’m hopeful this will move forward to planning and eventually secure further funding for this vital part of New Ross,” Sheehan added
