Education key to protecting Wexford people from card courier scams

Education and awareness are being highlighted as key tools in protecting people, particularly older and vulnerable members of the community, from falling victim to scams.

Gardaí are warning people across County Wexford about a card courier scam where fraudsters pretend to be calling from a bank before arranging to collect a victim’s bank card directly from their home.

Sergeant Eddie Wilde says the scam has already been reported in Wexford and warns that criminals can make their calls appear convincing by using personal information about their intended victim.

He says people should never assume a caller is genuine simply because they have some of their personal details.

Gardaí are encouraging people to take their time, stop and check before providing any personal or banking information, and never hand over their bank card or PIN to someone who calls unexpectedly.

Education about the different types of scams and knowing the warning signs can play an important role in preventing people from becoming victims.

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted or fallen victim to a scam is being advised to contact their bank and report the matter to Gardaí.
