Young Adults with Autism Take to the Screen in Kite Drama Project

A group of young adults with autism are taking their drama skills from the stage to the screen as part of a creative project with Kite in Enniscorthy.

Kite supports adults with autism by helping them develop skills, confidence and independence, while providing a bridge towards the working world and greater participation in their communities.

The ten-week drama course, led by Fintan Kelly, is now in its second year and gives young adults who attend Kite the opportunity to develop acting skills, build confidence and express themselves creatively.

Six participants are taking part this year, Anna, Con, Kieran, Sophie, Lee and Maeve, with the group learning different acting techniques and creating their own characters.

The project has already had success on stage. Last year, three participants took part and created Finding Peace, which ran for three nights at the Presentation Centre in Enniscorthy and was very well received.

This year, the group has taken the next step, creating their own film called A Quiet Drink.

Filming is due to take place this Saturday, giving the participants the chance to experience being involved in a film production for the first time.

The project is about much more than acting, providing an opportunity for the participants to develop confidence, teamwork and new skills in a supportive environment.

With filming just days away, the group are preparing to bring A Quiet Drink to life on screen.
