Electric Car Registrations Surge by 83% in County Wexford

New electric car registrations in County Wexford have increased by more than 83% this year, according to the latest figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).

A total of 1,035 new battery electric cars were registered in Wexford between January and October 2026, compared with 564 during the same period last year.

That's an increase of 471 vehicles, representing growth of 83.5%.

The figures also show a strong rise in overall new car registrations in the county.

Between January and October, 3,290 new cars were registered in Wexford, up from 2,954 in 2025 — an increase of 11.4%.

Electric vehicles accounted for approximately 31.5% of all new car registrations in Wexford during the first ten months of the year.

Electric car sales growing nationally

The Wexford figures reflect a wider national increase in demand for electric vehicles.

Across Ireland, 36,270 new battery electric cars were registered between January and October, an increase of 57% on the same period last year.

In October alone, electric car registrations rose by 55%, with 1,092 vehicles registered nationally.

Overall new car registrations nationally increased by 15% in October, while year-to-date registrations are up 6%.

Emma Mitchell, Operations Director at SIMI, said demand for electric vehicles remained strong, supported by government incentives and an expanding range of models.

She noted that 61% of new electric cars registered nationally this year were outside Dublin.

Battery electric vehicles now account for the largest share of Ireland's new car market at 27.7%, ahead of petrol hybrids at 23.5% and petrol cars at 19.4%.

The Volkswagen ID.4 was the country's best-selling new electric vehicle model in October.
