Enniscorthy Group Launches GoFundMe To Boost Facilities At Captain Wafer Hall

A community group in Enniscorthy is fundraising to help with the upkeep of Captain Wafer Hall.

The facility on Vinegar Hill Lane was recently reopened thanks to the efforts of the Enniscorthy Community Alliance.

Now the group has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help with the associated costs as it takes around 3 thousand euro a month to keep the hall open.

Niamh Hogan from the Alliance says structural works are also needed at the hall.

"We want to put solar panels on it to be as sustainable as possible so we need to replace the roof because it's an old asbestos one.

"We can get funding for that but we need to reach out and raise the co-funding that goes with that.

"Yes, everything is getting more and more expensive and we're just asking the community to get involved with us."

The centre reopened in June after lying dormant for 3 years and is now available for community events.

Niamh is on the Board of Directors and outlines some of the happenings they want to fund this year.

"We're running things like repair cafes, swap shops, energy clinics to teach people to be more economical with their energy use and reduce their bills which everyone loves.

"There will also be different community education classes, networking events and things like that."

Niamh Hogan says the Hall has a special place in their hearts and they want to see it back in its full glory:

"The Captain Wafer Hall was built originally by local people as a community space and it was used like that for a long time.

"If you talk to local people, they talk about having dances there and some people met their husbands there.

"Three years it was empty so we identified it as a space that could be re-used again and given back to the community."
