Government Accused Of Passing The Buck On Kilmore Quay Lifeguard Station

Officials in Dublin are "kicking the can down the road" when it comes to the future of the Kilmore Quay Lifeguard Station.

That's according to local councillor Ger Carthy who says he wants answers as to why there's been no movement on the lifesaving resource.

It's now over a decade since plans were first put forward for an upgrade to the facilities used by the local RNLI.

Councillor Carthy received correspondence from the OPW which said they couldn't move ahead with any plans until they get the green light from the Department of Transport.

He says that response after all this time just simply isn't on:

"They more or less threw the book across to the Department and said if they had the budget they'd progress it but that to me isn't good enough and it's called kicking the can down the road.

"We need to get real about this and the Department need to provide the funding to the OPW to deliver a new coastguard station on the lands that Wexford County Council gave them."

Councillor Carthy says a site has been chosen and the locals are ready to go but they are being held up in red tape.

At this week's meeting of the Rosslare Municipal District, the Independent representative called on the head of the Irish coastguard to attend their next meeting to provide an update on where we stand.

Councillor Carthy says the current status can't continue:

"The delivery of a new safe, secure and state of the art building for the very progressive Irish Coastguard staff that work out of Kilmore Quay, do very good work and the current accommodation they have is disgraceful."
