Historic Captain Wafer Hall Reopens in Enniscorthy Following €98,000 Investment

A historic community hall in Enniscorthy has officially reopened following a €98,000 investment, bringing a much-loved local landmark back into community use.

Captain Wafer Hall in Templeshannon, affectionately known as "The Hut", was officially reopened on Monday at a ceremony hosted by Enniscorthy Community Alliance.

Minister James Browne performed the official opening on behalf of Minister Dara Calleary.

Originally built by local volunteers in the 1950s, the hall was once at the heart of community life in Templeshannon but had remained inactive as a community facility for more than 15 years.

Its restoration was funded through the Community Recognition Fund 2024 and will see the building operate as the Spring Valley Community Eco Hub, providing space for community groups, training, sustainability workshops and household energy advice.

The hall has already welcomed yoga classes, sewing workshops, choir practices and local meetings.

However, Enniscorthy Community Alliance Director Dr Irene Cadogan warned that ongoing running costs remain a challenge.

"While the major work is complete, keeping the lights and heating on remains a challenge," she said, appealing for community support to help keep rental costs affordable.

Future plans include replacing the roof and installing solar panels to improve the building's energy efficiency.

The reopening was also attended by Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council Cllr Lisa McDonald, Cllr Pat Kehoe and Council Chief Executive Eddie Taaffe.
