Housing shortage threatens future of Camolin community, councillor warns

A lack of housing in Camolin and other rural communities is threatening their future, according to local Independent councillor Nicky Boland.

Councillor Boland says a shortage of wastewater infrastructure is preventing new homes from being built in the area, with no immediate plans currently in place for the necessary upgrades.

He says there is currently no house building taking place in Camolin, while the lack of infrastructure is restricting opportunities for future development.

Councillor Boland says the situation is having a wider impact on the local community, making it increasingly difficult for families and young people to remain in the area.

He says rural communities such as Camolin need investment in essential infrastructure if they are to grow and remain sustainable into the future.

The councillor is calling for greater focus on wastewater capacity and future planning to allow housing development to take place in Camolin and other rural areas.

Meanwhile, plans are moving forward on a new home building scheme which will allow developers to create their own wastewater infrastructure for estates.

The Housing Minister James Browne last year announced red tape on water infrastructure for developments of up to 40 units would be reduced.

Minister Browne at the time said that if the builders can produce "a high quality, EPA approved wastewater system, then we should get out of their way".

Wicklow Wexford TD Brian Brennan says we should see that scheme come to fruition soon.He also says other water issues for small villages like Camolin need to be addressed too.
