More than 24,000 Wexford motorists have three or more penalty points

Data analysed by insurance provider OUTsurance shows 25,871 drivers in the county have penalty points, with 24,276 of them holding three or more.

The figures for the first half of 2026 show that 18,148 Wexford motorists have exactly three penalty points.

A further 3,561 have six points, while 1,251 drivers have five points and 630 have nine.

The data also shows 59 Wexford motorists are currently on 12 points – the mandatory threshold for disqualification – while another 39 have 11 points.

OUTsurance says almost 40,000 more Irish drivers picked up penalty points over the past year, an increase of almost eight percent.

Across the country, 387,028 drivers have exactly three penalty points.

The insurer says speeding accounts for around 65 percent of active penalty point offences nationally, with mobile phone use the next most common offence.

OUTsurance says motorists may also face higher insurance premiums as a result of having penalty points, depending on factors including the number and type of offences and the type of driving licence held.

The company is urging motorists to be aware of the potential financial consequences of penalty points, as well as the road safety risks associated with offences such as speeding and using a mobile phone while driving.
