Wexford primary schools invited to claim free trees for National Tree Day

Primary schools across County Wexford are being encouraged to claim a free Scots Pine sapling ahead of National Tree Day.

A total of 2,000 trees are being made available to primary schools nationwide as part of this year’s “Planting for the Planet” campaign.

Last year, 101 primary schools in County Wexford claimed a free tree through the initiative.

National Tree Day takes place on Thursday October 1st and aims to encourage children to get outdoors, plant a tree and learn more about the role trees and forests play in the environment.

This year’s programme will focus on biodiversity, wildlife habitats, carbon capture and the use of timber as a renewable natural resource.

Schools taking part will also have access to classroom resources, nature activities and educational material about the Scots Pine.

The Scots Pine is one of Ireland’s native tree species and provides both food and habitat for wildlife.

National Tree Day is organised by the Tree Council of Ireland and is being supported for a second year by Glennon Brothers.
