New electric car registrations surge by 77% in County Wexford

New electric car registrations in County Wexford have increased by more than 77% so far this year.

Latest figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry show 924 new battery-electric cars were registered in Wexford between January and August, up from 521 during the same period in 2025.

Overall new car registrations in the county have also increased.

A total of 3,092 new cars were registered in Wexford during the first eight months of the year, compared with 2,804 in the same period last year — an increase of just over 10%.

The Wexford figures come amid continued growth in electric-car sales nationally.

More than 32,000 new electric cars have been registered across Ireland so far this year, representing an increase of 55% on 2025.

Battery-electric vehicles now account for 26.3% of the new-car market, ahead of petrol-electric hybrids and petrol cars.

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry is now calling on the Government to use Budget 2027 to maintain incentives aimed at encouraging more motorists to make the switch to electric.

SIMI Director General Brian Cooke says measures including the SEAI grant, VRT relief and Benefit-in-Kind supports should be retained.

The organisation is also seeking greater investment in high-powered public charging infrastructure and further measures to support the second-hand electric-vehicle market.
