Oireachtas Committee Publishes Recommendations for Restoration of Lady's Island Lake

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate, Environment and Energy has published a new report outlining a series of recommendations aimed at restoring Lady's Island Lake, one of Ireland's most important coastal lagoons and a designated Special Area of Conservation.

The report, published on June 5th, sets out 11 key recommendations designed to support the long-term recovery of the lake's ecological health while improving transparency, public engagement and environmental management.

Committee Cathaoirleach, Naoise Ó Muirí, said the restoration of Lady's Island Lake has been a priority for the committee since its establishment in May 2025.

Last month, committee members travelled to County Wexford for their first meeting outside Leinster House. The meeting, hosted at the offices of Wexford County Council, brought together council officials, representatives of the newly established Strategic Oversight Group and local community organisations involved in efforts to restore the lake.

Following the meeting, members visited Lady's Island Lake to assess conditions on the ground.

Deputy Ó Muirí described the lake as "an ecological, cultural and spiritual landmark" and said its deterioration over many years was unacceptable.

"Having examined the CLEAR report, which clearly identified the causes of the crisis, we committed to supporting a coordinated and effective restoration effort," he said.

The committee said it was encouraged by the leadership shown by Wexford County Council and the commitment of local communities working to improve the condition of the lake.

Among the report's recommendations are the regular publication of nutrient-level data, clearer prioritisation of ecological and management objectives, and the creation of a dedicated restoration website to provide public access to information and progress updates.

The committee is also calling for enhanced public consultation and continued engagement with local groups, while stressing that ecological expertise must remain central to all decision-making.

Other recommendations include capital investment to implement measures identified in the CLEAR report, including the possible construction of wetlands to improve water quality, greater coordination with the EU LIFE Strategic Nature Programme, and a review of septic tank grant schemes to support environmental improvements in the catchment area.

Deputy Ó Muirí said the report is intended to build on the momentum already generated by local stakeholders.

"We are encouraged by the leadership shown by Wexford County Council and the dedication of local communities. This report is intended to support the momentum already underway. We look forward to continued engagement with all stakeholders to secure a lasting and positive future for Lady's Island Lake."

Lady's Island Lake is recognised as one of Ireland's most significant saline lagoons and has faced ongoing environmental challenges in recent years, including concerns around nutrient enrichment and water quality. The committee's report is expected to play an important role in shaping future restoration efforts and ensuring long-term protection of the unique ecosystem.
