One Way System To Come Into Effect On Esmonde Street In Gorey Next Week

A one way system to alleviate traffic chaos on Esmonde Street in Gorey is set to begin next week.

Road crews are currently working on the busy road as part of a 2.5 million euro project to improve accessibility and support more sustainable travel.

Drivers have been left frustrated by a traffic light system in place since works begin in June.

Sinn Fein Councillor Craig Doyle says the district engineer has decided on a different approach to improve travel in the area:

"Starting next week they're hopefully going to have the one way system in place but it's not the one I thought was going to happen.

"It's going to allow traffic off Main Street, down Esmonde Street and to Courtown that way but it means anyone coming from Courtown will have to go out the Coach Road and onto the Arklow Road and into town that way."

There's set to be major disruption in the area until next July as part of plans to modernise one of the largest streets in the town.

Sinn Fein Councillor Craig Doyle is welcoming the change and says something had to be done:

"It has been very bad now in fairness with some people saying it's like we're back to pre bypass levels of traffic in Gorey and the town back then was a disaster.

"But look, you have to break eggshells to make eggs so hopefully it'll be worth it in the longterm.

"The engineers informed us today that it could be in place for the entirety of the works which are envisioned to be finished next July."
