A Rosslare councillor has described Ireland's high electricity prices as shocking and unsustainable, warning that households are struggling to cope with the cost of energy.
Jim Codd says Irish consumers are paying almost 40 per cent more for electricity than the European Union average, despite the continued development of wind and solar energy projects.
Figures reported by Eurostat earlier this year placed Ireland among the most expensive countries in the EU for household electricity, with prices significantly above the European average.
Councillor Codd is questioning why the expansion of renewable energy infrastructure has not translated into more affordable electricity for ordinary households.
He says communities have witnessed extensive infrastructure works and the development of wind and solar farms, yet continue to face substantial energy bills.
Speaking about the impact on consumers, Councillor Codd said:
"These huge bills simply cannot be sustained."
He also questioned whether large energy users, including international data centres, were benefiting more from renewable energy investment than domestic consumers.
With winter approaching, Councillor Codd says rising electricity costs are placing increasing pressure on household budgets.
His comments come amid continuing concerns about the cost of living and affordability of essential services across the country.
