35,000 calves are to be exported through Rosslare over the next few months
The market is providing a valuable outlet for the country's growing dairy herd expansion The extra calves are coming from the country's growing dairy herd and have found markets in both Holland and Spain. The first 2,500 left Rosslare for Cherbourg on Tuesday and arrived in Cherbourg yesterday afternoon. The consignment was brought on the Stena Carrier which is a replacement ship for the Stena Horizon which is undergoing maintenance. However being a smaller ship it had no accommodation facilities for lorry drivers and they had to be brought overland through the UK where they are meeting up with their consignment in Cherbourg today. It is expected a boat load of calves will leave Rosslare three days a week over the coming months. They will be sourced at marts and on farms around the country.
