Dr. Laurence Fitzhenry, a scientist at South East Technological University (SETU), has been granted two international patents for innovative eye drop technologies that could revolutionize treatment for millions of people globally. The patents, awarded by the United States and European patent offices, cover new nanomedicine eye drops developed by Dr. Fitzhenry and his team at the Ocular Therapeutics Research Group (OTRG). These drops are designed to deliver medication more effectively to the eye, potentially staying in place longer and improving drug absorption compared to traditional eye drops. Dr. Fitzhenry worked closely with SETU’s Technology Transfer Office (TTO) throughout the patent process, ensuring the innovations were protected and setting the stage for future commercial partnerships. The new technology could improve treatments for conditions like dry eye disease, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease. Tess Ames, Research Programmes Manager at OTRG, highlighted how this breakthrough bridges the gap between academic research and real-world applications. Dr. James O’Sullivan, Head of Innovation and Commercialisation at SETU, emphasized the potential global impact of these innovations and the importance of protecting intellectual property for future collaborations with industry.
