A Sinn Féin activist has been arrested in connection with a €4 million cocaine trafficking operation involving smuggling the drugs into Ireland in horse boxes. The man, previously outspoken against drug trafficking, is believed to have set up the international smuggling network on behalf of a Dublin-based criminal gang. The Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB) conducted a surveillance operation leading to his arrest, along with two others, following searches in Wexford and Kildare. The cocaine, estimated at 58kg, was linked to a long-time criminal from Clondalkin with ties to the Kinahan cartel and the Peadar Keating case. The Independent reports the three individuals arrested are currently being held in garda stations in Kildare and Dublin, while the drugs are being examined by Forensic Science Ireland.
