Vintage Tractor Run And In Aid Of Children's Cancer Charity This Sunday

A father raising money for a children's cancer charity is encouraging people to make the most of their time together.

Mick Flynn from Killanne lost his four year old daughter Laura last December after she battled cancer for two years.

He's helping to organise a family fun day in the village this Sunday while a vintage tractor run will also be held on the same day.

Mick says events like these are opportunities to spend quality time with the ones you love:

"I just want families to come out with their kids and make the memories like the ones we had of going to field days all over Wexford years ago.

"People are saying to me 'what can I do, can I give you money and donate.' I want you to keep that money and put it towards the games, because then you're making money for charity, you're giving it but you're also giving the kids memories like the ones we had from 20-30 years ago."

The Killanne Vintage Club will finish the final leg of its journey from Crumlin to Killanne, travelling from Kiltealy Hall to the fun day at 3pm.

Mr Flynn says he wanted to give back to Oscars Kids who helped them through a very tough time:

"We felt we had to do something because there are other families who are getting the call today, maybe it might be cancer or something else.

"Oscar's Kids want to keep doing what they're doing so they can spoil these kids but without the events like this one, it all just stops."

Participants in the run are rearing to go according to one of the organisers.

Chairman of the Killanne Vintage Club Leonard Fitzgerald says it's going to be a brilliant occassion:

"37 men are tearing away to sit on tractors for 7 hours and we're not talking about big fancy yolks, we're talking tractors from 50-60 years ago.

"All these old tractors shined up to the last and I think they're better looked after than the partners or anything else at this stage and it's just brilliant."

That report was funded by the Local Democracy Reporting Scheme.
