Vital Coast Guard training exercises off the Wexford coast have been supported as part of major offshore energy survey works linked to Ireland’s future electricity grid.
EirGrid has assisted Irish Coast Guard helicopter training operations during marine surveys being carried out off the south coast as part of its Powering Up Offshore – South Coast programme.
The exercises took place during the latest phase of site investigation works, which began in April and follow earlier survey activity completed in 2025. During offshore geophysical surveys, a vessel operated by contractor Fugro facilitated winching and hovering drills for Coast Guard crews when operations allowed.
The training is designed to maintain readiness for real-life emergency situations, with the Irish Coast Guard relying on a fleet of AW189 helicopters for 24/7 search and rescue operations across Ireland’s coastline, including maritime rescues, cliff incidents and medical emergencies.
EirGrid said the cooperation highlights the importance of safety and preparedness in busy coastal areas such as Wexford, where offshore activity and maritime operations frequently overlap.
The Powering Up Offshore – South Coast project will ultimately deliver new grid infrastructure to connect offshore wind energy to the national electricity system, with capacity expected to reach approximately 900 megawatts once fully developed.
