The number of women on Wexford County Council is way below the national average. That's according to Women for Election who released the figures in conjunction with International Women's Day yesterday. Only 12 per cent of the members of Wexford County Council are women - ranking the county at number 25 in the country for elected female politicans to the local authority. Just 14 per cent of candidates who stood in Wexford in the last local election were women - making the county one of the lowest in the country at number 29. Of the thirty four councillors on Wexford County Council just four are women - they're Kathleen Codd Nolan Fine Gael, Barbara Ann Murphy Fianna Fail, Mary Farrell Independent and Deirdre Wadding People Before Profit. However nationally the last local election saw a 33 per cent jump in the number of women elected to county councils around the country. Women for Election is calling on Wexford women and the political parties in the county to ensure a greater representation of females in future elections.
