Wexford housing commencements already surpass 2025 total

Housing construction in Wexford has already surpassed the total number of homes commenced in the county during the whole of last year.

New figures from the Department of Housing show 715 homes have been commenced in Wexford so far in 2026.That compares with 563 homes commenced during the entire 12 months of 2025.

There were 57 new home commencements in Wexford in August, up slightly from 56 in July.The latest figures mean 152 more homes have been commenced in the county so far this year than in all of 2025 — an increase of around 27 percent.

The strong figures in Wexford come as housing construction nationally continues to accelerate.A total of 3,880 new homes were commenced across the country in August — an increase of 231 percent compared with August last year.

The latest figures bring the national total for the first eight months of 2026 to 22,854 homes, up 162 percent on the 8,711 commenced during the same period in 2025.Of the homes commenced nationally in August, 55 percent were apartments, 35 percent were scheme dwellings and 10 percent were one-off homes.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Wexford TD James Browne says the figures reflect what he describes as a strengthening pipeline for new homes.He says the latest commencement figures, alongside an increase in planning permissions, show continued momentum in housing construction.

However, the Minister also stressed that completed homes — when keys are handed over to homeowners or families — remain the ultimate measure of housing delivery.

The latest figures show Wexford has already exceeded last year's total for housing commencements, with four months of 2026 still remaining.
