Wexford records one of country’s lowest social housing vacancy rates

Wexford County Council has recorded one of the lowest social housing vacancy rates in the country, according to new figures from the National Oversight and Audit Commission.

The vacancy rate for local authority housing in Wexford stands at 0.94 per cent compared with a national average of around 2.5 per cent.

The county is also performing better than the national average when it comes to returning vacant council homes to use.

The average re-letting time in Wexford is 21 weeks compared with a national average of around 32 weeks.

Chair of the National Oversight and Audit Commission Michael McCarthy said the figures reflected positively on how Wexford County Council is managing its housing stock.

However, the report also highlights pressure in other areas.

More than 16 per cent of Wexford’s local primary roads are classified as structurally distressed.

Around 8.1 kilometres of regional roads were strengthened during 2025 at a cost of approximately €2.3 million.

The report also shows Wexford County Council recorded the highest certified sick-leave rate in the country.

Mr McCarthy said that figure needs to be examined in context as long-term illnesses involving individual staff members can significantly affect overall statistics.

Wexford also performed strongly in revenue collection, with a 96 per cent commercial-rates collection rate and a 100 per cent home-loan collection rate.
