Wexford Sees Sharp Rise in Electric Car Sales as EVs Reach Record Market Share

County Wexford has recorded a significant increase in both new car and electric vehicle registrations this year, according to the latest figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).

A total of 2,929 new cars were registered in Wexford between January and July, representing an 11.75 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

Electric vehicle sales have risen even more sharply. 877 new battery electric vehicles were registered in the county during the first seven months of 2026 – an 85 per cent increase on the 474 registered during the same period in 2025.

Nationally, July was a record-breaking month for electric vehicle sales, with 9,682 battery electric cars registered – almost double the number recorded in July last year. Electric vehicles have now become Ireland's most popular engine type, accounting for more than 26 per cent of the new car market and overtaking hybrid vehicles for the first time.

SIMI Director General Brian Cooke said Government incentives, including the recently introduced scrappage scheme and existing electric vehicle grants, have played a key role in driving sales. He said the growth in EV registrations is evident across every county, including Wexford, and has called for the supports to be retained in Budget 2027.

The figures also show overall new car sales nationally are up more than five per cent so far this year, while imported used cars have increased by 37 per cent compared with 2025.
