CABINET TO DISCUSS LEGISLATION NEEDED FOR ABORTION REFERENDUM

The Health Minister says he hopes today will be an important step on the road to supporting women with crisis pregnancies.

The Cabinet is due to discuss the legislation needed to hold a referendum on the issue.

A debate will then be held during a special sitting of the Dáil tomorrow to ensure that people will be able to go to the polls by the end of May.

Simon Harris urged his colleagues and the people of Ireland to remember the thousand of women who’ve had to travel abroad

Meanwhile, a new survey shows almost two-thirds of GPs don’t want to provide abortion pills.

They say we should follow the UK’s example where the pills come from an NHS clinic instead.

Former Master of the National Maternity Hospital, Doctor Peter Boylan, is skeptical of the study which spoke to just 500 people.

He says there’ll be plenty of medical support if abortion is legalised.
