Housing Crisis Now Nationwide According To The Simon Community

HOUSING CRISIS NOW NATIONWIDE ACCORDING TO THE SIMON COMMUNITY

The Simon Community of Ireland says the latest report by Daft.ie survey shows the housing crisis is now nationwide.

New figures show that during the second quarter of the year, average rents in Dublin grew 8.5 percent compared to the same time last year.

But the rate of growth was even faster outside the capital, with jumps of more than 10 percent in places like Cork and Galway.

Whil rents in County Wexford have risen by almost 5 per cent in the past year.

The average advertised rent is now 600 euro – up 11 per cent from their lowest point in 2013.

Simon Communities spokesperson Niamh Randall says the government must take the housing crisis seriously.

“What we really need to see is an increase in rent supplement as a matter of urgency” she said.

“We need to see the much-promised measures around rent certainty implemented as quickly as possible – but we also need to see existing property, existing housing and existing state property being used much more effectively”.

“This crisis needs to be taken seriously” she added.
